The Paperology RAG is organized by Artefact Lab and Atelier -30- in the Department of Communication, at Université de Montréal.

During this event Christina will give a brief presentation on her work and explain the role of paper in her practice, which includes live-action narrative video as well as reconstructions of historical paper media, such as peep boxes. This will be followed by a brief Q&A and a peep box making workshop during which Christina will lead participants through a series of simple prompts.

Participation in making is not required, but for those who are interested in following the prompts, we encourage you to have the following items on hand:

• Paper (printer paper is fine – nothing too thick as pen marks should be visible through each sheet)
• Cardboard (from a cereal box for example) to make the front and back boards of your peep box
• Pencil and pen
• Scissors or scalpel
• Glue stick or glue and brush for application.
• Ruler or small measuring stick

Longer “how-to” videos will be available on the Paperology RAG website after the presentation/workshop for interested folks to view and follow along at their leisure. These videos will contain more detailed instructions on how to produce your own peep box and will remain accessible through the remainder of the Paperology RAG meetings.

Christina Corfield is a research-based multimedia artist who enjoys getting her hands dirty in the studio as well as in archives and libraries. She relishes exploring unusual and forgotten media of the distant past as a method to reassess the media of our digital present. Christina holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a PhD from UC Santa Cruz in Film and Digital Media.www.tinacorfield.com

Atelier Retailles is an experimental paper making studio in Montreal specializing in accompanying contemporary art projects and new developments in paper-based art. This talk will present the endeavours of the studio, a brief introduction to paper making techniques, and the Papier Retailles bimonthly editorial project.

Sophie P Voyer is an artist, paper maker, and the Founder of Atelier Retailles. Maia C Donnelly is a bookbinder and paper maker and artist in the realm of artists’ books.

The Paperology RAG is organized by Artefact Lab and Atelier -30- in the Department of Communication, at Université de Montréal.

Elana Herzog uses material culture to consider aspects of ephemerality, entropy, pleasure and pain. Her current focus is on the global migrations of culture and technology as seen through the lens of textile. She researches the ways that people and materials relocate, transforming domestic and institutional environments over time. She collects textile materials gleaned from daily life; charged materials that carry stories, mark time, chart navigations and conquests. These materials form the basis of her sculptural installations, in which she blends and translates them into visually dynamic mash-ups that are open to multiple readings.

In 2008 Elana was awarded a residency at Dieu Donné Papermill, in New York City, and has continued to work with handmade paper pulp ever since.

Elana’s account of her art practice with paper will ground the « experiential » conditions of paper that we will explore throughout the second half of the Paperology RAG. Our meeting on January 21, 2021 is on Support, Substrate, Medium.
